So have you seen pictures of ruffle cakes all over Pinterest? Well, I don't need an excuse to add ruffles to anything...so why not add them to a cake too? Sounds great to me!
I showed my daughter a picture of a ruffle cake online and she told me she wanted one for her birthday...so of course I needed to try it out first. My husband is always encouraging me to try out recipes once or twice:)
I used this video and it was great at explaining how to make this cake. It's SO simple! I need to work on my "ruffles" on the top since they look a little sloppy (the frosting was starting to get warm) but other than that...I'm pretty happy with my first decorated cake;)
I took the easy way out this time and used a white cake mix in a box. There is also a surprise inside:
Different colored layers!
I mixed up the cake and then divided the batter into thirds. I put 1 drop of pink food coloring in one bowl, 3 drops in the second, and 5 in the third bowl. The two bottom layers look the same in this photo...but look different in person.
Also, for the icing, I also decided to take the easy way out (this was a test cake after all!) so I used two (16.2oz) cans of fluffy white icing and mixed it with 2 cups of powdered sugar with an electric mixer. It has a nice creamy texture but also kept its shape while I was piping on the cake and forms a little crust on the outside as it dries (while staying creamy inside).
I learned a lot when doing this cake and I can't wait to make another one for my daughter's birthday. The next time I am going to add a few more layers:)
